RETIRED governor, Reg Herbert, marked the start of work on a new £400,000 sports centre for Kingsmead School, Wiveliscombe, this week in 1994, placing a ceremonial first peg used in setting out in the building’s foundations.

This was featured in the County Gazette on January 21, 1994.

Watched by pupils, teachers, governors and council officers, he then checked the siting of the peg with an electronic measuring device.

The school is being equipped with four badminton courts and facilities for other games for use by pupils and the local community.

Plans for a second phase include cricket nets, reception area and a fitness area.
