THE Taunton branch of music chain HMV could be saved after the founder of Sports Direct placed a bid to buy the firm.

Staff are waiting to see if their jobs will be secured by Mike Ashley's attempts to buy the company, according to the BBC.

HMV has an outlet in the county town's Orchard Shopping Centre and was previously located in Fore Street.

The company, which has 2,200 staff at its 125 stores, entered administration last month for the second time in six years.

The BBC said neither Mr Ashley nor administrators KPMG would comment.

As well as owning more than 60 per cent of Sports Direct, which has more than 400 stores nationwide, Mr Ashley has bought retailers such as the House of Fraser and Evans Cycles and his company also owns stakes in French Connection and Debenhams.

HMV, which was saved six years ago by its current owners Hilco, has seen its fortunes decline due to changes in people's music habits from buying albums to streaming singles.
