A WEATHER warning alerting people to possible snow and icy conditions has been issued for Somerset.

The Met Office says that from 1pm today (Thursday), there is a risk of more snow, which come after yesterday's showers.

The alert warns of:

* Possible travel delays on roads stranding some vehicles and passengers.

* Possible delays or cancellations to rail and air travel Some rural communities could become cut off.

* Power cuts may occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected.

* A chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.

* Untreated pavements and cycle paths might be impassable because of black ice.

A forecaster said: "Today, cold and frosty in central and eastern areas, but turning cloudier with rain arriving across Cornwall.

"As this move eastwards it will readily turn to snow inland and over hills, with several centimetres in places. Windy in the far south west."

Temperatures will reach around 7C, he said, with rain, sleet and snow set to hit east overnight.

"Rain, sleet and snow will steadily ease overnight, although further wintry showers may affect southern coasts," he added.

"Staying breezy and cold with ice and some frost, although winds will ease."
