AN area of Taunton was reported to be "in lockdown" this afternoon as armed police officers were spotted in the street.

Dozens of officers descended on Outer Circle following reports of a man with a gun at around 2.30pm.

At least seven police cars were seen in the area and at least two officers were armed.

A team of six officers was witnessed entering a property carrying defensive shields.

A man was later seen being led away by police.

Staff at nearby Minerva Primary School were informed of the situation, but the children were later allowed home.

The incident appears to have been scaled down, although there is a still a police presence in the area.

We have approached Avon and Somerset Police for a comment.
