PASSERS by beside the derelict Firepool site in Taunton have been doing a double take this week.
Workers have been on site, but there's no sign of any building work yet - more than 11 years after Taunton Market closed on the site and moved to North Petherton.
Several proposals have come and gone and the latest £825,000 project involves clearing up the land for future development when it finally arrives.
The surface of the ground is being broken up and a more sightly grassed area will be laid to make it easier on the eye.
The "site enabling activities" will "adequately secure the site and enhance the physical environment", according to a recent statement from the council.
The work, which also includes putting in a new access road, will take place in phases between this month and October.
It will allow pedestrian and cycle access between the town centre and the railway station through the creation of a temporary boulevard.
