A CYCLIST is in a 'life threatening' condition in hospital following a crash involving a lorry. 

Emergency services rushed to Bristol Road, Bridgwater, at around 4.50pm yesterday (April 29).

The crash involved a lorry and a man, believed to be from Bridgwater, who was travelling on a push bike. 

Avon and Somerset Police officers are appealing for witnesses of the crash, which saw the man airlifted to hospital with serious injuries. 

Anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident is asked to get in touch with police. 

A spokesman said: "A man is in a life-threatening condition in hospital following a collision on Bristol Road, Bridgwater.

"The man was riding a push bike when he was in collision with a lorry travelling in the opposite direction. He is believed to be in his 40s and from Bridgwater.

"The road was closed until just after 10pm for the emergency services to deal with the incident."

The road was closed between the Wylds Road junction and The Drove throughout the evening while emergency services responded to the incident.

A spokesman for South Western Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 4.44pm about a road traffic incident involving a lorry and a person on Bristol Road, Bridgwater.

"We sent various resources to the scene including doctors, a land ambulance crew, and an air ambulance crew.

"A seriously injured male patient was conveyed to hospital by Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance."

Firefighters worked to help the man involved in the incident.

A spokesman said: "The fire service received several calls for a road traffic collision in the above area.

"Fire engines from Bridgwater and the rescue tender from Taunton was mobilised to this incident.

"Fire crews released one male from the trailer unit of an artic heavy goods vehicle using a hydraulic ram and vehicle chocks.

"The casualty is now in the hands of the ambulance service."
