BT fined for street works breaches in Upton

The company, whose address was given as Newgate Lane, London during the case at Taunton Magistrates' Court admitted the offences in Bittescombe Lane, Upton, near Dulverton, on February 6 this year.

It was fined £8,000, along with a £170 victim surcharge and £1,759.17 costs for carrying out street works without the approval of the street authority, on contravention of the New Road and Street Works Act 1991.

And magistrates slapped a £6,000 on BT for executing the works in contravention of a direction of safety in respect of the appropriate traffic management.

The company received a £1,667 fine for not having given the appropriate advance notice of the works.

The total bill faced by BT is £17,596.17.

BT was ordered to pay a total of £36, 237.90 in a case in the same court last month after admitting similar offences in Cheddon Road, Taunton and Venture Way, Taunton.

The latest case was heard in court the same day as broadband provider Gigaclear Ltd was hit with fine and costs totalling £10,339.17 for breaching the same act in Wellington.
