ONE of the UK’s most original jazz pianists returns to Ilminster Arts Centre on Friday, June 21 - John Law.

This time with his exciting new band line up, the Re-creations Quartet, for an evening of creative new versions of tunes from jazz, pop and classical.

Described by Alfred Brendel as ‘highly gifted maverick musician’, John Law began his career as a child prodigy on classical piano, before pursuing jazz and improvised music in his 20s.

Started in 2016, his Re-Creations began as a fun project, with the aim of playing lots of different tunes from different genres.

Featuring Parliamentary Jazz Award winner Sam Crockatt on sax, James Agg on double bass and Billy Weir on drums, the quartet quickly developed artistically, with the group thriving on the artistic excellence and spontaneous creativity generated when they played.

Because audiences almost always know the tunes, the arrangements can be complex and interesting while being at the same time remaining very accessible.

The quartet’s repertoire includes, as well as jazz classics like Monk, Miles Davis, Gershwin, well-known tunes from pop/rock/indie (Pink Floyd, Beatles, Radiohead, Adele), as well as classical pieces such as their version of Kyrie from Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle and Satie’s Gymnopédie.

Ilminster Arts Centre is a vibrant community amenity located within a beautiful 18th-century former Unitarian Church.

Ilminster Arts Centre is run with generous help from many unpaid volunteers and hosts a busy programme of regularly changing art exhibitions, live music concerts and other events, as well as being home to a popular café with free wi-fi, and a craft shop selling carefully selected locally made items.
