SOMERSET is waking up to heavy rainfall and strong winds - but it is expected to get a bit better as the day progresses.

While a

weather warning remains in place for the Exmoor area

, elsewhere the rain is expected to ease and clear westwards through the day, the Met Office said.

However, there could be more unsettled weather to come.

"As bright spells develop in its wake so will heavy and perhaps thundery showers, giving some torrential downpours in places," said a Met Office forecaster.

And the forecaster also warned of unsettled conditions into tonight.

"Showers and thunderstorms will slowly ease through the evening with some drier interludes developing," they said.

"However rain may return to westernmost parts in the early hours, with isolated showers elsewhere."
