A PROPOSED extension at Taunton Racecourse will ensure it remains "a prominent venue in the racing calendar".

A planning application has been submitted to Somerset West and Taunton Council seeking permission to build a single storey extension to the Portman Stand.

A statement accompanying the application says the development will provide additional space "to accommodate the new and improved jockey facilities".

It adds: "The proposal aims to provide additional floor area to ensure the racecourse is able to provide changing facilities that comply with current standards."

The flat roof building to the rear of the stand will be constructed of brickwork walls to match the current finish of the Portman Stand.

The statement says: "Taunton Racecourse is a long standing business that has operated at the current site since 1927.

"The proposed extension will provide a solution that meets current needs of the racecourse by not only providing enhanced jockey facilities that meet current standards but ensuring the racecourse continues to operate as a prominent venue in the racing calendar."
