ONE of Taunton's oldest residents has passed away aged 106.

Sam Welland, who turned 106 on March 4, passed away on July 12.

He leaves behind two grandchildren, Richard and Kate, as he reunites with his wife Beryl.

Mr Welland was a popular man around the town, making friends in many circles, including the Clovermarle Stroke Club and Moose International.

Grandson Richard Morris, who now lives in Wolverhampton with his family, accounts his grandfather’s impressive prolonged independence to his relationships with his dedicated friends.

Mr Welland lived independently at his Upper Holway Road house until he was 104, before moving into Calway House nursing home.

Mr Welland grew up in Hertfordshire before moving to Exeter after the Second World War and then on to Taunton, where he worked as an engraver at the UK Hydrographic Office.

Mr Morris recalls spending summers with his grandfather in Taunton, and came to realise how much of a life he had built for himself here.

He said: "He was amiable, a bit cheeky, really just a great man, with a great sense of humour, and he could tell a good story."

As well as being a keen gardener and dedicated professional during his career at the UKHO, Sam also had a passion for sports.

Mr Morris added: "He loved Tottenham Hotspur, football, and was a big cricket fan.

"He was delighted to hear England had made it to the World Cup final before he passed."

Mr Welland was also a stamp collector, among his many interests.

But what was Sam's secret to such a long life? Mr Morris says it's down to two things: dessert, and good friends.

"He loved cake. He had a sweet tooth so would never skip a pudding," he said.

"But I think really it's been down to having the love and care from the people around him.

"His really close friends have looked out for him.

"He was such a nice man, that's why people went out of their way for him. They encouraged him to be independent for so long.

"We hope lots of people can come to help us celebrate his long life."
