FRUSTRATED motorists heading out of Taunton on the A358 are experiencing snarl ups due to roadworks.

They are complaining at being stuck in long traffic jams on the road between a section of the Toneway and Junction 25 of the M5.

Roadworks signs have reduced the double-lane carriageway to one lane.

But one disgruntled driver has said he has not seen any workers on the stretch of road.

And Doug Lowe reckons there will be absolute chaos on Friday, when the town hosts the annual Taunton Flower Show and Somerset play a Vitality Blast home match against Surrey.

Mr Lowe said: "On Sunday when I was driving into town (from Henlade) at 10am, there were cars queuing back up from the J25 roundabout to near Creech Castle.

"Then yesterday (Monday) traffic was queuing from J25 roundabout right up past Creech Castle and halfway along Toneway.

"There was nobody working there, but one lane had been coned off.

"We’ve got the flower show and cricket on Friday and it’s going to be a nightmare.

"If nobody’s working on it, why are they putting cones down? Remove the cones and stop the traffic build up."

Shoppers at Sainsbury's at Hankridge have also been struggling to get into the store in recent weeks.

A spokesperson for the supermarket said staff have been giving customers advice about who to contact to complain about the roadworks.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “Our Hankridge Farm store car park has been affected by roadworks in the area and we’re working closely with the local authorities to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.

"We’re very sorry for the inconvenience this has caused.”
