PHIL Churchill thought his dream of teaching martial arts had died when he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease last year.

But the 43-year-old has fought back and says he has never felt better now he runs his own martial arts classes in Bridgwater.

Having started training seven years ago, Phil became a martial arts tutor with a company but his diagnosis turned his life around.

"My diagnosis with Parkinson's was a real kick in the teeth," Mr Churchill said.

"My former company said they would support me but decided that they no longer wanted me to teach as an instructor -I think because they were worried about insurance."

Phil said he was offered a desk job which 'wasn't for him' and thought that part of his life was over.

"After a tough few months I decided I wasn't going to let it stop me and I was going to set up my own class," Mr Churchill said.

Phil started Plan C Training at Bridgwater YMCA, and his initial success led him to set up further classes.

Last week 55 students had their first grading, something Phil says was wonderful to see.

"I thought that side of my life was over but the support I have had from the community has been amazing and actually I have never felt better," Phil said.

"The regular exercise is a huge help and has actually slowed the advance of the Parkinson's."

Phil runs three weekly classes, one in Bridgwater YMCA on Wednesdays, Weston-super-Mare on Thursdays, and Berrow's on Fridays during school term time.

The next classes take place in the first week of September.

"Taking up martial arts can help with communication, confidence and discipline," Phil said.
