A HUGE new 'sustainable' development could be coming to Watchet if plans are approved.
Tameer Homes, part of the Tameer Group, are the new owners of the former Wansbrough Paper Mill, has submitted the application to Somerset West and Taunton council for approval.
The large development would include up to 400 new homes, ten live/work incubator units, a residential care village or up to 160 sheltered apartments and up to 60-bed retirement home, an aparthotel and associated leisure facilities, employment land and a public carpark.
An idea of what the site could look like
A spokesman said: "The main aim of the redevelopment of the former Wansbrough Paper Mill site is to create a sustainable, attractively landscaped extension to the town of Watchet providing a strong, structured edge to the existing urban envelope.
"The site is located in a highly sustainable location within walking distance of the centre of Watchet. The creation of up to 400 new homes, a new care village and 8,000sqm of employment floorspace will help meet local need for new homes and jobs with the addition of a new local centre and leisure facilities further strengthening the local service offer.
"The development will provide a range of high quality family homes and flats where people will live and take pride in their environment. It will also offer new publicly accessible open space, including new recreational routes, a linear park, children’s play areas and a riverside walk, benefiting both new and existing residents."
DEVELOPMENT: Wansbrough Mill, aka Watchet Paper Mill
The developers say they aim to create a 'high quality' scheme on the Brendon Road site, which is respectful of the existing heritage and landscape.
A visitor centre would also be created to recognise the 'historic significance' of the site.
It is also hoped the development would encourage pedestrian and cycle movement across the site.
Consultation events have already been held in the run up to the application being submitted.
