CHILDREN could soon be volunteering to help parents with the weekly shop at a Taunton supermarket.

The Asda store, in Creechbarrow Road, is set to close its cafe in October and replace it with a McDonald's.

Instead of coffee and cake, customers will be able to order a Big Mac and Coke after filling up their shopping trolleys.

Asda staff were called in by managers to be given the news.

The company has not yet made an official announcement, but the plans are believed to be in their final stages.

An Asda customer, who did not wish to be named, said: "It's a great idea.

"The cafe is a bit outdated and I hadn't used it for a very long time.

"I can see parents 'bribing' their kids to behave while the family are shopping with the offer of a McDonald's as a reward. It should make shopping in Asda much less stressful.

"I haven't had a McDonald's in years, but I might be tempted as a way of chilling out after shopping."

It is not known when the McDonald's would open.

There are already two McDonald's restaurants in Taunton - one in East Street, the other the drive through outlet at Hankridge Farm.

The fast food chain has installed its golden arches signs at a number of Asda stores across the country.
