THERE were lots of entries to the 85th Wellington Flower Show.

The most recent event, which took place on Saturday, August 31 at the Alan Rogers Centre at Wellington School, saw the second highest figures organisers have seen in recent years.

Cookery entries were the bet for a long time, while fruit, vegetable and flower entries also remained high.

Organiser, Sheena Page, said: "This is in no small way due to the sterling efforts of growers such as Ron Symons, Mike Hawkins, Mike Broom and David Smith.

"The judges were extremely pleased with the high quality of the exhibits. The only disappointment was the children’s entries which were relatively low.

"Our thanks go to our sponsors and advertisers without whom the show would not be possible.

"Visitors were able to buy plants from Whitepost and Ford Nurseries and there was a wonderful display in the hall from Chelston Nurseries. We were also pleased that the Somerset Wildlife Trust, the Wellington WI and the Wellington Museum Society were able to attend. Once again the Wellington Camera Club had a room to show visitors the range of their activities over the year.

"We were delighted to welcome the new headmaster of Wellington School, Eugene du Toit, to present the prizes. Our thanks go to him and the Governors of the school for the use of the ARC, which is a wonderful venue for the flower show."
