CLIMATE groups will unite for a protest in Taunton later this month.

On September 20, a Taunton General Strike is planned, joining the worldwide Earth Strike, calling for action to tackle the problem of climate change.

Extinction Rebellion, Youth Strike 4 Climate, Earth Strike UK will be joined in Taunton by Parents 4 Future and Taunton Green Parents for 'a riot of colour and energy', according to a spokesperson for the protest.

"The Climate and Biodiversity Emergency is the biggest news we have ever faced and our government is still only paying lip service while the planet literally burns," the spokesperson said.

"The elephant in the room is actually on fire.

"If the climate was a bank it would have been 'saved' by now."

The protest gets underway at 11am on September 20, with a march planned to start outside Clarks, in Taunton town centre.

"It should be a riot of colour and energy, led by the youth in protest at the government and other powers whose negligence is criminal in the eyes of our children," the spokesperson added.

"Leave your homes, leave your workplaces - unite with the millions of children striking on September 20 in thousands of locations worldwide by joining in with the Taunton General Strike.

"Our climate is in breakdown - our children's futures and our very lives hang in the balance.

"This is an emergency - stand in solidarity with the school strikers on the first general strike in the UK since 1926; where millions of adults will walk out of their workplaces to join the youth."

In April, hundreds joined a protest in Taunton led by Extinction Rebellion, with numerous other demonstrations taking place in the town across the summer.
