STEALTH bombers were seen flying over the county yesterday morning.

The American B2 bombers were seen and heard over Worcester at around 10am flying north over the city.

Worcester News readers shared their photos and thoughts as the bombers flew over.

Richard Gwynfryn Morris wrote: “Flew right over us in the Rainbow Hill area and was beautifully deafening.”

Anne Pratt said: “It was such an awesome sight to see. It’s made my year.

“Absolutely fabulous, for there to be two as well - wow.”

The three B-2 Spirits have been based at RAF Fairford and have been a regular sight over Worcestershire for the last three weeks as they depart or return to their base on flights towards Iceland and back.

There has been a major exercise known as “Cobra Warrior” taking place over the UK involving air forces from Germany, Italy the US and Israel, as well as the RAF.

The three B-2s have finished their deployment and were heading back to their US base, Whiteman AFB, Missouri yesterday morning.

The B2 first flew in 1989 and there are only 21 in the world. Individually, each plane costs around $2 billion and they are part of a $45 billion development programme.

Even though they are loud, the ‘stealth’ element comes from several design features such as the engines being buried in the wings to camouflage the heat and exhaust signature.

The plane does not always fly stealthily, and must be ‘stealthed up’ by the pilot, a process which is a closely guarded military secret.
