AN ice rink could be skating its way to Taunton this Christmas.

Your County Gazette understands the idea has been circulated to members of Somerset West and Taunton Council (SWT), with plans to be announced imminently.

It is understood the rink will be situated in the town centre, at Castle Green, and it is hoped it will boost trade in the town ahead of the festive period, opening at the beginning of December.

The rink is set to open on December 9 after festivities will run until January 5, 2020.

Councillor Marcus Kravis, portfolio holder for asset management and economic development, said: “The real ice rink is designed to enhance Taunton’s festive offer as a fantastic retail and tourism destination.

“This would add significant value to the current festive offer within Taunton, and would increase the number of people visiting the town over the Christmas period for a different reason.”

Mr Kravis said the ice rink would create a unique selling point for Taunton which would set it apart from other towns during the Christmas shopping period.

He said: “Town centres rely on experiences to increase footfall and provide a return on investment.

“There is currently a gap in the market in small, local towns providing within their towns, and an ice rink will provide this as well as creating a family-friendly, festive experience in Taunton.”
