POLICE have made an arrest in connection with drug activity around a Taunton primary school.

The man was recently detained by officers after being found with six wraps of suspected Class A drugs and a quantity of tablets.

The police operation was carried out just last month in response to reports of drug use and related litter by people living close to Priorswood Primary School.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said police have been conducting neighbourhood patrols in the area following concerns from residents.

The suspect, who was arrested and searched under the Misuse of Drugs Act, was released under investigation pending tests to identify the substances.

The spokesman said: "Neighbourhood police patrols around Priorswood School in Taunton led to an arrest for drug offences just last month.

"Officers carrying out patrols in response to reports of drug use and related litter found a group of people congregating in Grange Park.

"The officers detained them for a search under the Misuse of Drugs Act and one man was arrested after being found with six wraps of suspected class A drugs and a quantity of tablets.

"The man was released under investigating pending tests to identify the substances."

PC James Breakwell said: "This arrest was in direct response to community information about drug crime in the Priorswood area.

"We're fully aware of the impact of illicit drugs use and dealing in communities and the local neighbourhood team is working hard to deal with this.

"We're always grateful to the public for giving us information and will continue to use it to set our priorities and target our patrols."

The County Gazette has reported this week how one mother has witnessed a suspected drug dealer arriving on a field beside Priorswood Primary School on a bike and making some phone calls before a queue of users arrive on the scene and inject themselves in full view.

Another mother has reported how the area around the school and sometimes the school grounds contain discarded used needles.
