A MAJOR police operation involving several officers and a force helicopter has turned out to be "a false alarm with good intent".

An ambulance and fire crews also took part in the dramatic incident at the former Orchard Court care home, in Harp Close, Taunton.

The emergency services descended on the property at around 6pm on Wednesday and cordoned off the area following reports of an intruder.

Officers returned to the site yesterday morning for a closer investigation.

They were stood down after a thorough search of the premises produced no evidence of any crimes having been committed.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said today (Friday): "The building was searched yesterday and nothing significant was found. It appears to have been a false alarm with good intent."

Orchard Court closed more than three years ago and there is currently planning permission to demolish the building and replace it with nine four-bedroom homes.
