CRICKET legend Marcus Trescothick will switch on Taunton’s Christmas lights this year, it has been confirmed.

The honour has been given to the Somerset star, who retired at the end of the season, who will complete the big cricket-mas switch-on at 6.30pm on Sunday, November 24.

Organisers said the former England opener was a natural choice for the festive event in a landmark year for cricket, which saw Taunton host three ICC Cricket World Cup matches and Somerset CCC win the Royal London One-Day Cup.

Marcus, whose birthday is on Christmas Day, said: “It is a huge privilege to be invited to switch on Taunton’s Christmas lights.

"Christmas is such a wonderful time of year and I am delighted to be part of Taunton’s festivities this year.”

Cllr Marcus Kravis, executive member for economic development at Somerset West and Taunton Council, said: “I am delighted that Marcus Trescothick has agreed to kick off our festivities this year.

"He is a well-loved local resident who has been a wonderful ambassador for Taunton on the world stage.

"I am sure that many people from near and far will enjoy this opportunity to show their appreciation for everything he has achieved in his remarkable career and to wish him well for the future.

"Cricket gives a huge boost to the town, contributing to its vibrancy and vitality. This was particularly evident during the three CWC matches at the County Ground this year and I hope this will continue throughout the festive season which is so important to our local traders and businesses.”

Taunton’s Christmas tree has once again been donated by Langford Lakes who have also generously donated trees for Wellington and Wivelisombe.

A SWT Council spokesperson also thanked everyone who has contributed to the festive offering including Blackdown Financial, Wilkie May and Tuckwood, Taunton Farmers Market, Monkton Elm Garden Centre, and Wheeler and Son Ltd of Bridgwater.

The council is working with the Winterfest organisers to co-ordinate the Christmas events in Taunton this year.

Ahead of the switch on there will be a day of activities in the town centre from 10am until 8pm, with Father Christmas in attendance in Santa's Grotto.

Road closures will be in operation at East Street, Corporation Street, Hammet Street and North Street from 6am through to midnight with diversions in place.
