RETAIL giant Debenhams has added 7,000 jobs for the Christmas period, including 39 roles at its Taunton store.

The business announced yesterday (November 20) that it had filled all the roles in preparation for the Christmas sales period, which is Debenham's busiest time of the year.

The company is also mobilising volunteers from its central functions too, with 500 people from its London HQ going out to their local stores to help over the peak trading period.

Debenham's bosses have taken a fresh approach its Christmas recruitment drive this year, focusing on hiring colleagues not just with retail experience but from the hospitality industry too.

Gemma Tomlinson, area manager at Debenhams Taunton, said: “Our current team of colleagues are a testament to the local workforce, and we are delighted to welcome our new recruits.

“We have 39 new employees joining us this Christmas and many colleagues that work with us over this period stay on as permanent members of staff, so it is a crucial time in our recruitment calendar and a great opportunity for those seeking a career in retail.

"Debenhams’ emphasis on flexible shift patterns will ensure additional colleagues are in store, whenever customers need them."

The 7,000 new recruits will also start in time for Debenhams’ Black Friday promotions on November 29.

The firm is set to release sneak peeks of its Black Friday deals later this week

A spokesman for Debenham's added: "This is about ensuring shoppers across the country enjoy an unforgettable shopping experience supported by enthusiastic staff who are dedicated to going the extra mile.

"The flexible positions that Debenhams has recruited for includes on the sales floor, in its beauty halls, serving in the restaurant and even behind the scenes in stock management."
