THE drivers of these cars had a lucky escape after a crash in West Somerset this afternoon.

The smash happened on the A39 outside the Butchers Arms, in Carhampton, at around 2pm.

PC Sam Donati was on the scene with colleagues.

He posted the following on social media: "We were dispatched to deal with the scary consequences of inattention on the road.

"Thankfully nobody with serious injuries, however a heck of a mess and a LONG couple of tailbacks.

"Thankfully recovery truck from our untaxed car (seized earlier) was about second in the queue so from this scene of carnage we had the A39 fully reopened in under an hour."

The road was closed in both directions for almost an hour following the incident, causing long tailbacks.

An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokewoman said: "Police were called to a collision on the A39 at Carhampton Cross at 2pm today.

"Two cars were involved in the collision which blocked the road near the Butchers Arms pub.

"Police attended and the road was reopened by about 3pm.

"There was no need for ambulance crews to attend."
