A MASSIVE search and rescue operation ended in tragedy when a body was found on Exmoor.

A number of organisations were called in to help locate a "high-risk missing person" inside the Exmoor National Park early yesterday morning (Saturday).

Members of the Exmoor Search and Rescue Team worked alongside Devon and Cornwall Police, Mountain Rescue Search Dogs England, Lynmouth Coastguard Search and Rescue and Ilfracombe Coastguard Search and Rescue after a call came in at around 6.30am.

An Exmoor Search and Rescue Team spokesman said: "Swift water rescue technicians from Exmoor Search and Rescue Team and colleagues from Lynmouth Coastguard Search and Rescue and Ilfracombe Coastguard Search and Rescue searched the inland rivers whilst additional multi-agency team members and the search dog teams from Mountain Rescue Search Dogs England searched the open moorland areas.

"Tragically, the missing person was located deceased shortly after the search teams were deployed. Our thoughts are with the missing persons friends and family at this difficult time."

The dead person has not yet been officially named.
