A PERSON has died after a train collided with a car at a level crossing near Taunton yesterday evening (Monday, December 23).
A spokesman for Great Western Railway said the 1837 service from Paddington to Plymouth struck a car at a level crossing near Taunton.
The GWR spokesman said: "The car driver died at the scene. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of those affected at this incredibly difficult time.
"The British Transport Police are investigating the circumstances of this tragic incident and we will provide our full assistance.
"Thankfully no customers or staff have been injured, but the driver of the train is understandably very shaken."
GWR confirmed the line has re-opened this morning (Christmas Eve).

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: "We were called at 9.10pm on 23/12 to a level crossing in Bradford on Tone following a report of a collision between a train and a car.
"Sadly, the driver of the car died at the scene.
"The incident is not being treated as suspicious."
