FIREFIGHTERS are tackling a barn blaze which has seen 30 tonnes of hay and an HGV vehicle catch light.

Crews from Street and Glastonbury, along with the water carrier from Bridgwater, were mobilised to a report of a fire at the barn near Reynolds Way, Compton Dundon, at around 2.50am this morning (January 14).

When they got to the scene, they immediately requested assistance from a further crew, which was sent from Somerton, said a Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson.

"The barn, approximately 6m x 10m, contains approximately 30 tonnes of hay and an HGV vehicle," the spokesperson said.

"The contents are well alight. Crews at work with a compressed air foam jet to prevent further fire spread."

Around an hour an a half later, crews reported how they were trying to protect nearby buildings, as well as 50 tonnes of woodchip and 6 to 8 tonnes of used tyres, from catching light.

"Fire crews allowing the contents of the barn to burn out and protect adjacent buildings and slurry tank from further involvement in fire," the spokesperson added.

"Barn also containing 50 tonnes of woodchip and 6 to 8 tonnes of used tyres not currently involved in fire.

"Crews are protecting the tyres with one attack jet and two further attack jets in use to protect the other buildings."

UPDATE: The fire service has confirmed the property owner has been helping with the bid to prevent the blaze spreading by moving the tyres, while relief crews from Castle Cary and Yeovil have also arrived on site.
