AN ANNUAL town carnival is facing the axe if new event organisers aren't found.

Wellington Carnival risks not going ahead for its 2020 procession if a new chairman and secretary don't come forward.

Outgoing chairman, Sharon Collins, is unable to continue in the role.

An emergency meeting is set to be held next month in a last-ditch attempt to find some helpers.

A spokesperson said: "We are holding an emergency general meeting on Wednesday March 11 at the Beambridge Inn.

"Due to circumstances beyond our control we are now seeking a chair and secretary to assist with the organisation of Wellington Carnival 2020.

"If we are unsuccessful in recruiting a chair and secretary – there will be no Wellington Carnival for 2020.

"If you are interested in carnival and keeping a long-standing tradition in the town going, please come along to the Beambridge, as we would love to meet you."

The new chair and secretary will need to be registered as directors, but the resigning chairman has stated she will be around to help with the handover period.

Committee meetings are held usually once a month at the Beambridge, on the second Tuesday of the month.

The carnival is part of the South Somerset Federation, alongside Taunton, Ilminster and Chard.

It kicks off the carnival season, normally in the last week of September.

The carnival's main fundraising event, Wellington Street Fair, is still going ahead on Sunday, June 7.
