THE premises of a former opticians in the centre of Taunton could be turned into a hairdressing salon.

The former Boots eye centre in North Street has been boarded up since the shop closed some months ago.

A planning application has now be lodged with Somerset West and Taunton Council for a change of use of two of the three storeys.

The documents submitted to the local authority show proposals to return the entrance of some of the interior to something more in keeping with an early Grade II listed 19th Century building.

They say: "The proposed works are considered to be justified in the interests of improving the building for its proposed use as a hairdressing salon, and having a neutral impact upon the heritage asset, and may

therefore be regarded as acceptable in planning terms."

It also says that the top storey could be turned into a flat.
