DOREEN Ash has been a symbol of a one British ordeal for many years.

Seven-year-old Dorren was evacuated from London to Somerset in 1939 and her story has served as a long-standing reminder of the welcoming nature of the county during the Second World War, housing countless evacuees.

Now, as the country endures another crisis, she has once again become a symbol of the county's determination to conquer adversity.

For little Doreen at Donyatt Halt is now donning a protective mask, as the county endures a lockdown to protect itself from the coronavirus.

The statue was sculpted by Ian Edwards, of Chard, whose grandfather Billy was evacuated to Donyatt at the same time as Doreen.

Young Doreen exemplifies the determination - and kindness - of Somerset communities during times of crisis, qualities in evidence again today.
