FIREFIGHTERS from Wellington have been helping to tackle a major forest fire.

The crew was called to assist Dorset firefighters battling the blaze covering heath and woodland the size of 115 football pitches.

A major emergency has been declared at the incident in Wareham Forest, where the fire broke out on Monday afternoon.

Crews are continuing to work at the scene, where visibility remains poor today due to increased smoke and fog, with people urged to keep their doors and windows closed.

At one stage 30 fire engines were at the scene, with the crew from Wellington joining colleagues from Dorset and Wiltshire and Hampshire.

The Wellington firefighters have been on the scene today (Wednesday) with a high volume pump to boost water provision from a local river.
