FRAUDSTERS are targeting vulnerable people in Somerset by pretending to be police officers or bank officials, police have warned.

Avon and Somerset Police said they are aware of a number of courier frauds operating in the force area and want to help people to recognise them and avoid becoming a victim.

Courier fraud is where fraudsters call someone, posing as a police officer or bank official, claiming there are corrupt bank staff, intent on stealing their money.

The caller will ask the victim to withdraw a sum of money and a courier will be sent to collect it.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: "Remember – your bank or police will never ask you to withdraw money; buy items on their behalf; ask for your bank account details; or offer to collect money or other goods.

"Caution – If you receive an unexpected or suspicious call, hang up, use another phone to call back and confirm that the bank or police have called you.

"Think – How do I know they are who they say they are?
