BRIDGWATER Fair has been cancelled.
The event was set to take place in September, but Sedgemoor District Council - in consultation with the Showman’s Guild - has decided to call it off.
"While September is some months away, there is a lot of planning, organisation and administration associated with the street market, in particular, which needs to be done now," said a council spokesperson.
"It is impossible to guarantee social distancing within the street market."
The event essentially has three elements, they said, with the four-day fun fair and rides on St Matthew’s Field, a four-day street market in West Street, which has more than 100 stalls, and a one-day market and horse fair on St Matthew’s Field, traditionally held on the first day only.
All have been called off.
"Stallholders and the horse fair organisers will be contacted by the council to let them know of the decision," the spokesperson added.
It comes after this year's Bridgwater Carnival was postponed until 2021, as well as all other circuit carnivals in Somerset.
