A 10-year-old boy who loves to doodle has won a competition that will see his bookmark design used to promote next year’s Montgomeryshire Literature Festival.

Woody Jones, a pupil at Montgomery Church in Wales Primary School, has been announced the winner from 27 entries by local young bookworms.

Due to the high standard of entries, there was a close spread of votes over the top five designs, so Monty Lit Fest authors helped with a second round of selection.

Twelve out of the 21 confirmed festival writers became involved and Woody’s design was chosen as the winner. It will be reproduced as printed bookmarks, to promote the literary festival which will take place in Montgomery in June 2021.

Woody’s striking black and white design earned him a personalised book bag, donated by Four Crosses company The Clever Baggers, and a signed book by children’s author Debi Evans, in addition to some other prizes.

The runners-up were Sicily Dickinson in second place and Daisy Evans in third, who also received book bags and books.

A Montgomeryshire Literary Festival spokesperson said: “The Monty Lit Fest committee would like to thank everyone who entered, the judges, those who donated prizes for this competition and offer congratulations to Woody.

“It is planned that all 27 entries will be displayed at the festival next year and as many of the judges commented, the entries were marvellous, it’s a shame there couldn’t be more than one winner.”

The entries to the competition were judged online by festival sponsors including Eaves & Lord Bookshop, Field Mouse Research, Halls, Harrisons, Montgomery Vineyard and Walkers are Welcome Montgomery.

The Montgomeryshire Literature Festival, an annual celebration of writing in Wales and the Borders, was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
