WORK units and affordable and eco-friendly homes could be built on the site of a disused brewery.

Somerset Co-op Community Land Trust has secured an option to buy agreement on the land and property in Wiveliscombe.

Part of the funds raised by a share offer the group is running would go on buying the location and carrying out site investigations

The trust has commissioned architects to draw up plans for the scheme.

Meanwhile, SCCLT has submitted a planning application to Somerset West and Taunton Council for a community meeting room, flats for single people and a community gardening project at an 18th Century terrace property in East Reach, Taunton.

The project will act as a trial for the use of sustainable building methods to create low-cost, unsubsidised housing.

SCCLT, which retains all of its properties as affordable rents rather than selling them off, is looking at other sites for larger scale similar schemes.

Treasurer Caitlyn Reynolds said: "Along with all the exciting new projects on the horizon, we will have two flats in our East Reach property available very soon.

"One is currently in the early stages of refurbishment, and the other will be ready for tenants from the first week of July."

Anyone interested in being a tenant should visit landtrust@somerset.coop or e-mail landtrust@somerset.coop

SCCLT secretary Alex Lawrie has appealed for volunteers to join the trust for roles such as deputy treasurer, communications and social media, site clearance and building maintenance.

The trust's annual general meeting is on Tuesday, June 30 at 2pm via Zoom - the details are meeting ID 818 4217 2412, password 459378, using a web browser tinyurl.com/ybz6ly7x or phoning in on 0203 481 5240 or 0131 460 1196.
