TRAVEL Somerset has issued images of a main road that had to be closed during the week after it literally melted.

Gritters were called in and highways workers set about repairing the A39 at Bilbrook as temperatures soared into the 30s on Thursday afternoon.

A Travel Somerset spokesman said: "The A39 at Bilbrook was closed temporarily to dust the road surface due to the extreme heat.

"As you can see, parts of the road were literally melting.

"But thanks to the quick actions of our highways heroes and an unexpected Somerset grit run, damage was minimal."
