SEDGEMOOR District Council is set to buy six brand new, carbon-neutral affordable homes on a mixed ownership scheme in a village near Bridgwater.
The new homes in Tuckerton Lane, North Newton, will be the first carbon-neutral affordable homes built in Sedgemoor, at a cost of up to £950,000.
Council officers worked with North Newton Housing Steering Group to design the scheme that addressed specific housing needs of local people from North Newton, as well as being affordable homes.
A spokesman for Sedgemoor District Council said: "This project will support the council’s climate change ambitions and is hoped will be the forerunner of many more affordable carbon neutral homes."
Sedgemoor District Council will also be investing £100,000 via a grant to Magna Housing Association to support the £3.6m construction of 20 affordable-rented homes in All Saints Terrace in Bridgwater.
The building project will also have a £300,000 grant from the EDF Energy Housing Mitigation Fund.
The SDC spokesman continued: "These new homes will regenerate a brownfield parcel of land and will provide much needed affordable housing during a period of high housing demand."
These two projects will see an additional 26 affordable homes built in Sedgemoor and form part of Sedgemoor’s Covid19 recovery plan.
It is hoped that the homes will have occupants by spring 2023.
Having been approved by the council's Executive committee, both recommendations will need to be ratified by Sedgemoor District Council, at a meeting of Full Council on July 29th.
