ENFORCEMENT action will not be taken against traveller encampments on public land in Somerset during the Covid-19 crisis unless there's a safety risk.

Police and the county's district councils have agreed not to move groups on during the current pandemic.

The policy is outlined in Somerset's Local Outbreak Management Plan, which outlines how the authorities would respond to an outbreak of the virus in the county.

The document says: "The support for gypsies, travellers and nomadic people has been put in place to reduce movement wherever possible and to take a pragmatic approach to reduce risk.

"Avon and Somerset Police and Somerset's district councils have agreed not to take enforcement action against travellers at this time unless there is a safety risk.

"This reduces the need for onward movement and potential contact with further members of Somerset's settled community."
