A NEW village shop and post office is opening next week.

Villagers have raised thousands of pounds and worked hard to attract grant funding to relocate Oake Community Shop and Post Office.

It is moving from a bungalow in Saxon Close to purpose-built premises in an extension to the village hall.

Members of a community benefit society that will run the operation have received the keys to the new building ahead of the move on Thursday next week (August 20).

Society secretary Diane Charlton said: "We are moving just a short distance down the road to an extension on Oake Village Hall and we hope that customers old and new will come along to see what we can offer in our larger, purpose-built premises.

"We have many people to thank for our success with the new build - the committee for their determination and enthusiasm; volunteers and the local community for their support and belief in the project; the National Lottery Reaching Communities Fund and Somerset Community Foundation for their support and cash; Eleven 10 Architecture for designing a stunning building in keeping with the village hall; and Blue Wave Construction for such a good job of the building work."

Mrs Charlton added: "The shop remained open throughout the coronavirus lockdown and we continue to provide our customers with goods and services, plus a friendly face and cheery greeting.

"We use local suppliers wherever possible, which meant that we had no shortages throughout the difficult days – even toilet rolls.

"The shop remains open in its present location until August 20 with some opening hours adjustments – please check. We look forward to your support in the future."
