VIRTUAL celebrations of the 75th anniversary of Victory in Japan Day (VJ Day) will take place across Mendip this Saturday.

Held on May 8, VE day marks the end of the war in Europe, but VJ Day celebrates the complete end of the second world war – once the troops had stopped fighting in Asia.

Mendip District Council will be flying the Union Jack flag at their offices in Shepton Mallet on August 15, as well as hosting some online events, including a video from Councillor Damon Hooton.

Cllr Hooton said: “VJ Day will be commemorated very differently this year due to the global pandemic, but it’s so important that we unite to remember and celebrate the lives of those who fought so hard for our freedom.”

The council will also be encouraging people to show their support on social media, as well as joining in with the two-minute silence at 11am.
