A NEW Indian restaurant in Taunton was officially opened last night (August 12) - and got some top level backing.

Mayor of Taunton, Francesca Smith, was on hand to light a candle at the official opening of Turmeric Kitchen @ 65, in Station Road.

The restaurant is being run by Niranjan Gopal, general manager at the former Mint and Mustard restaurant, and specialises in Southern Indian food, while also offering traditional curries.

The Mayor said: "Delighted to light the candle at the official opening of the Turmeric kitchen @ 65.

"A great new business for Taunton.

"I wish Sajil, Neelima and Niranjam all the very best with their new venture."

Speaking ahead of the opening, Mr Gopal said: "I'm very excited about opening.

"You can't find this kind of cuisine anywhere in Taunton or the rest of Somerset."

Specialities include 10 varieties of dosa rice pancakes; idli steamed rice puddings, which Mr Gopal calls the healthiest breakfast in the world; paratha bread; and Indian rolls.

Mr Gopal added: "We're called Turmeric Kitchen because all our curries have a pinch of turmeric, making them naturally healthy."
