THE closure of a main road in Taunton town centre could be about to finish, depending on public feedback.

A number of streets across Somerset, including Taunton's East Street, were closed to cars in June to facilitate the safe reopening of non-essential shops.

The moves were funded under the Department for Transport's £250m emergency active travel fund.

Some road closures were removed at the start of August, such as Holyrood Street in Chard.

But other schemes, including the pedestrianisation of East Street, and one way traffic for Bridgwater's Eastover, East Quay and Salmon Parade, continued.

Now, Somerset West and Taunton Council (SWT) is collecting views on whether keep East Street closed to traffic.

Cllr Marcus Kravis is the SWT's executive councillor for economic development.

He said: "Our public consultation seeking views on the temporary closure of East Street to all vehicles except cycles ends on Thursday, so if you haven’t already responded please take advantage as your feedback is important.

"The temporary measures were implemented using emergency funding from the Government’s Active Travel Fund to enable social distancing and encourage walking and cycling in support of the safe reopening of our high streets.

"Phase two funding could mean an extension of this temporary closure so we are taking this opportunity ahead of the further funding announcement to give everyone a chance to have their say on the perceived benefits or issues created."
