TAUNTON'S civic leaders snatched a bird's eye view of the county town from the roof of a block of retirement flats under construction.

Town mayor Cllr Fran Smith and district council leader Cllr Federica Smith-Roberts attended the topping out of the over-55s development on the former Quantock House site in Paul Street.

They joined staff from the Affordable Housing and Healthcare Group and Platinum Skies at the scheme, which will feature a total of 88 one and two bedroom shared ownership apartments.

The first residents, who will move in next year, will enjoy facilities such as a bistro and communal lounge.

The higher apartments offer balcony views across the town and surrounding countryside, while the kitchens and bathrooms are equipped with energy efficient technology.

Oliver Hunter, head of construction for Affordable and Housing Healthcare Group, said: "We’re proud and excited to be in Taunton.

"Alongside our partners Homes England, we are placing over £33million into this retirement living development.

"This is a huge investment into the local economy and indicative of our confidence in Taunton itself.

"The site will bring many benefits to retirees and our dedicated team have worked hard to maintain construction progress, despite the challenges of lockdown and Covid driven operating constraints."

David Hines, chief operating officer at Platinum Skies said: “We’re in the heart of Taunton and will create an environment that feels less like retirement and more of a lifestyle choice."

The project will feature an on-site lifestyle manager to support residents and create a community atmosphere.

The company can manage the sale of residents’ previous homes and assist with the removals, and even looking after the sale, donation or disposal of unwanted furniture.
