SOMERSET is set to face a weekend of wet and windy weather as Storm Alex arrives from Europe.

The Met Office has warned it is due to Storm Alex, which will bring 'very unsettled weather to France on Friday, but also some wet and windy weather for southern parts of the UK.'

The forecaster has issued a yellow weather warning for wind and rain from 3am until 8pm today (October 2) which covers parts of Somerset and Wiltshire as well as Devon, Hampshire and Dorset.

The Met Office is warning people to expect 'a spell of wet and windy weather' which has the potential to cause flooding and transport disruption.

Forecasters said that the rain could cause some flooding in the South West and there is with a chance homes and businesses could be flooded.

In areas where there is flooding, there is also a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "Spray and flooding on roads will make for dangerous driving conditions resulting in longer journey times.

"It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves.

"Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely.

"Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely.

"Some short term loss of power and other services is possible."

But the Met Office has warned that the wet weather will continue into the weekend and has issued two yellow weather warnings for rain across the UK for Saturday and Sunday (October 3 and 4).

The warnings will be in place from 3am until 6pm on Saturday and 3am until 6pm on Sunday.
