MEMBERS of Taunton Vale Rotary Club weren't daunted by the weekend weather, planting hundreds of purple crocus bulbs in Taunton's Vivary Park to mark World Polio Day.

They were joined in their efforts by people from Young Somerset, one of the charities supported by the club.

President Tony Blackshaw said: "It takes more than inclement weather to stop Rotary from serving the community.

"The colour purple is significant as once a child has been immunised, a fingertip is inked in purple to indicate they have received their vaccine.

"Hopefully people will enjoy a swathe of purple flowers next spring, as a reminder of the importance of eradicating polio worldwide - something in which Rotary is heavily involved and a cause to which local people have contributed.

"We'd like to thank Somerset West and Taunton Council for giving us permission to plant, and of course thanks to all those who came along to help."
