WITH news of a plan to pedestrianisation of East Street in Taunton, it brought back changes made to the town centre more than two decades ago, which also caused some consternation.
Back in 1996, then-leader of Taunton Deane Council, Jefferson Horsley, was full of praise for the changes, which saw the landmark war memorial moved and gardens in front of Market House removed.
Work got underway in February 1996, with the scheme described by then-president of the chamber of trade, David Cudlipp, saying the changes would make Taunton ‘a more attractive place’ and ‘put some civic pride back into the town’.

And Mr Horsley said: “It is great that this scheme is actually happening - we have worked for three and a half years for this.”
The work took nine months and was completed in October 1996.
Now, things could be set to change again in the town centre, with proposals to pedestrianise East Street, changing the layout once again.
