I WAS disgusted when the government voted to end free school meals. This was a Scrooge decision that bore down hard on the one in five local children living below the poverty line.

It was heartening to see local businesses and charities step in to try to fill the gap. They deserve our thanks.

I was even more heartened when the growing tide of public revulsion and campaigning forced the government to do a u-turn.

Now the biggest losers will be the local Conservative MPs who were all so gung-ho about cutting free school meals and find themselves hung out to dry by the Prime Minister's reluctant change of heart.

Will they now apologise? If not, then we shall all remember this sorry saga when voting time comes around again.
