YESTERDAY'S daily number of new confirmed Covid-19 cases in Somerset was half the previous day's total.

While a total of 43 across the four districts is welcome, there should be caution as the weekend figures tend to go underreported.

There were 11 positive tests in Mendip, taking the total number of confirmed cases there since the pandemic started to 885.

Sedgemoor had five new confirmed cases, lifting its overall total to 1,513.

In Somerset West and Taunton there were 13 more confirmed cases, making 1,460 overall.

And South Somerset recorded another 14 cases, taking its total to 1,452.

The infection rate based on the latest seven-day period rose in two district and decreased in the other two.

Mendip's 140 positive tests over a week give it an infection rate of 121.1 per 100,000 of population (down from 136.7 the previous day).

Sedgemoor had 133 new confirmed cases in seven days at a rate of 108 per 100,000 (previously 115.3).
