FESTIVE huts, letters to Santa, a Christmas Craft and independent market will be taking place in a Somerset town this year - despite the tier 2 coronavirus restrictions.
The four Alpine food huts will be in Taunton until January 10, selling cheeses, German sausages, sweets and treats and a Christmas carvery.
The Christmas Market, in Fore Street, will be held between tomorrow (December 5) and Sunday, December 20. It will also stay open until 9pm on Thursdays for late night shopping.
Taunton’s Independent Market will be held on December 13, 19 and 20, selling a range of food, drink, crafts, homewares, beauty and fashion.
Children can write directly to Santa with the temporary post office has opened behind the Market House in Fore Street – but the letters must be posted no later than December 11.
Somerset West and Taunton Council are continuing with these events, with Covid-safe restrictions in place including social distancing, mandatory face mask wearing, limiting the number of customers and regular disinfection of hand-contact surfaces.
Cllr Marcus Kravis, executive member for Economic Development at SWT, said: “I’m absolutely thrilled we’re able to offer a variety of festive activities over the Christmas period and in such a short turnaround, given the uncertainty surrounding the recent allocation of regional restrictions.
“We’ve taken precautionary measures to ensure the safely for our residents and visitors, and I’d like wish those who intend to venture out a safe and welcoming experience in Taunton.
“It’s really important that we support our local businesses to help them recover from what’s been a very challenging year and I’d like to extend my thanks to our market traders and everyone involved for putting on these events, all of whom are very excited to welcome you back, albeit under different circumstances.”
Street entertainment will also take place in the town centre, including a Snow Queen, Elves on stilts, Merlin’s Magic Christmas Walkabout, Roller Skating Illuminated Christmas Presents, Meet Mrs Santa on stilts and giant Squirrel Nutkins.
