A VEHICLE - with someone trapped inside - overturned and caught fire yesterday evening (December 15).
It had overturned on Westcombe Road, Stoney Stratton, near Shepton Mallet at 5.39pm.
Fire crews and the police attended the incident, but fortunately occupant inside the vehicle managed to free themselves.
The cause of the fire was recorded as deliberate.
A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: "Fire Control were called by the Police to a vehicle fire following a road traffic collision. The vehicle had overturned and there were also suspicions that somebody could be trapped in the vehicle.
"Pumping appliances, two from Shepton Mallet and one from Frome, with the heavy rescue unit and supporting appliance from Glastonbury were mobilised. An ambulance was also requested.
"On arrival the overturned vehicle was well alight, firefighters used three hose reels to extinguish the fire and hydraulic rescue equipment to gain access.
"Fortunately the occupants had released themselves.
"Firefighters assisted the Police by using a thermal imaging camera to check the surrounding area."
